![]() ![]() ![]() Matlab is expensive, and the cost kicks in right away: there's no Community Edition or "open core" of Matlab, so if you're a business and you want to use Matlab at all, it costs several thousand dollars up front. Cost is a big barrier maybe the biggest.I've been building Matlab systems in the Finance for about 15 years here's what I've seen: There are very good reasons to make a switch, but price wasn't one of them, it's just the one I think stuck. But such considerations don't really matter in an academic environment, and so we are where we are. Having used BOTH professionally, the maintenance costs for matlab are much MUCH lower than for Python - if I'm assigning people from my FTE budget, I don't care that I'm getting the license for free if I spend an extra man month each year dealing with another f'n pandas update that breaks backwards compatability for no f'n reason. There are more practical reasons that have forced my hand, but the cost should not have been one of them. The thing that bothers me about this, is that it wasn't a good reason to move away from matlab. ![]() Once that generation of students moved through grad schools and became profs, the world shifted, and matlab has gradually developed dust and cobwebs in many departments. People don't like to pay for languages, and this was especially strong in universities. People view python as free, and, despite it being relatively cheap for educational institutions, I think this has built up into an almost moral crusade. I think the single biggest cause of the shift is the price allergy. When I went through my computer science degree, virtually ever class focused on algorithms used Matlab in fact - and my school was very well known for it's CS program (obviously many classes used C++ or C or Java as well, to be clear). The short answer is that many fields cited below (Machine learning being my favorite) WERE dominated by Matlab. You are going to see quite a bit of different opinions about this one. ![]()

![]() ![]() PokerSoftware: What were the problems with the PokerTracker 4.11 release? It was designed to allow our developers and third party users to cache custom stats for the first time, improving PokerTracker 4's performance so it is better than ever before. So that was what PokerTracker 4.11 was designed to do. They use custom stats in new ways to visually describe the same information rather than provide it in numbers. For example, companies like ProPokerHUDs and CoffeeHUD actually create stats that you or I normally wouldn't't consider to be stats. You can also create a custom HUD that incorporates advanced stats that help you visualize what is occurring at the table. This way you can do your post-game analysis with reports or graphs that contain stats that are the most meaningful to you. This means if we don't have a stat that is already predefined in PokerTracker 4, any end user or third-party developer can actually create that stat. Steve McLoughlin: One of the cool things about PokerTracker 4 is that we have always allowed custom stats. PokerSoftware: How does this change with custom stats? Caching makes the database respond very fast un-cached columns result in very slow custom stat updates. When the data in a column is cached, it means the data in the column is pre-calculated.Īfter each hand is imported, the cache is then updated with the new recalculated result. The default columns in PokerTracker 4 can be stored in a database cache of pre-calculated results, but custom columns could not be cached until PT4.11. We then multiply this by 100 to display the stat in percentage form. ![]() The stat is calculated by taking the VPIP Action column and then dividing it by the VPIP Opportunity column. ![]() For example, the stat for VPIP is consists of a column counting the total number times the player voluntarily put money in the pot and another column that is the total number of opportunities there were for that player to put money in the pot. Each columnn records a specific action or opportunity to take that action. This allows multiple stats to use the same building blocks, but these blocks aren't necessarily stored in the database. Steve McLoughlin: Stats are PokerTracker 4 "objects" that do not exist in the database instead, stats are also composed of PokerTracker 4 columns. ![]() PokerSoftware: How is a stat normally created in PokerTracker and what is the importance of caching? PokerTracker 4.11's principal new feature is the inclusion of database caching for custom stats for the first time we have been working on this very complicated update for the past half-year. It defines how PokerTracker can be used by our power users without slowing them down. Steve McLoughlin: PokerTracker 4.11 is a major breakthrough for PokerTracker 4. PokerSoftware: Tell us a bit about PokerTracker 4.11. PokerTracker representative Steven McLoughlin (pictured) answered a few of our questions about this major release, what the problems were, how they are being resolved, and what was learned from the experience. Tweet If you missed it, PokerTracker Version 4.11 was a major breakthrough for users and developers of custom stats, but this software release didn't't occur without a few problems. ![]() ![]() ![]() They will need to be replaced before installation. I think at least that the Expansion Tradition when finished should cut build cost and build time in half.Īt least that, because if you want to utilize the habs like you need to, the growth is crashing down by the time one is about to be filled, if you cannot upgrade them yet, what in turn means you have to grow out every habitat by itself. This leads to habitats feeling a bit lacklustre in 3.0 at the time of writing as there is not much variety/customisation and the 5 perma locked building slots can make building habitats feel wasteful- as a science habitat or alloy foundry habitat will produce a good amount of specialist resource output- but there is simply not enough building slots to provide a good worker resource output on top of this e.g. This takes us to 7/7 slots and those last 5 slots stay locked. But you may have to use another Strategic Resource building to upkeep the fully upgraded admin building. Unless you are a hive mind or using robots and want your machine factories/spawning pools leaving us at 2 optional slots, and if you want admin cap building 1 optional slot. One fully upgraded Advanced Research Labs/Alloy Foundry/Consumer Goods generally requires generally 2 of the necessary Strategic Resource buildings to upkeep. Any plans to include ways to get all building slots on habitats? A non-Void Dweller empire with Voidborne Ascension perk can only have 7 out of 12 building slots unlocked on a habitatġ building slot is taken up by Habitat Central Control, this leaves 6 optional slots. ![]() ![]() ![]() Type Threes are success-oriented and extremely driven.
